What forex trading actually is

Forex just means "foreign exchange." Every time someone changes one country's money into another — a tourist changing dollars into naira, a company paying a supplier abroad — that's forex.

Forex trading means trying to profit from the fact that money's value keeps changing. One dollar might buy you ₦1,600 today and ₦1,550 next month. If you can predict which way that's going, you can make money from the difference.

That's really the whole idea. Everything else you'll learn — charts, signals, strategy — is just different ways of trying to guess that direction before it happens.

Nobody "owns" the forex market the way a company owns a stock exchange listing. It's really a global network — banks, governments, companies and traders like you, all constantly agreeing on what one currency is worth against another, all day, every weekday. There's no single building where this happens; it's the biggest, most liquid market in the world, all conducted electronically.

The reason prices move at all comes down to supply and demand for that currency, driven by things like a country's interest rates, its economic health, and how much confidence the world has in it right now. A stronger economy or higher interest rates usually attracts more buyers for that currency, pushing its value up against others.
