Academy / How You Actually Trade

Demo account vs live account

A demo account uses fake money on real live prices. It's the safest place to learn what a chart actually does before anything real is on the line.

A live account uses your actual money. Same platform, same charts — but now every mistake costs something real.

Demo won't teach you everything — it can't fully recreate the fear of losing real money. But it will teach you the mechanics: how to place a trade, set a stop loss, and read a chart, without paying tuition in real losses while you figure that part out.

There's a real psychological gap between demo and live that no amount of demo trading fully closes, and it's worth naming honestly: it's not the mechanics that change, it's you. The exact same setup that you'd calmly let play out on demo can suddenly feel unbearable to watch when it's real money moving — that's not a flaw, it's just how humans are wired around loss.

A good middle step many traders skip: once demo feels too easy, don't jump straight to your full intended size live. Start live with the smallest position your broker allows, even smaller than you think you need. The goal at that stage isn't profit, it's proving to yourself you can follow your own rules when it's real.

Key takeaway

Learn the mechanics on demo first. Save your real money for when you already know which buttons do what.

Example

A demo account with $500 fake dollars feels completely different from a live one with your actual $500 — same numbers on screen, but only one of them makes your hands shake.

Try this

If you don't have a demo account yet, open one today with any broker. Place one small trade and just watch it move for 10 minutes. That's the whole exercise — just watch.
